At San Diego Bay Animal Hospital we understand that making the decision to have your pet undergo surgery may be a difficult one. All of our doctors are highly skilled and experienced in veterinary surgery. They have undergone rigorous training starting with specialized surgical internships and have a wide range of surgical experience.
Dr. Van Maele and Dr. Ferenstein both have worked extensively in different surgical and ER specialty hospitals throughout San Diego. Having worked so closely with most, if not all of the specialty clinics in the area they are familiar with cost, procedures and differences between clinics. We work hard to place our patients in the best situation for both owners and pets.
Feel free to call for references about our great surgeries. Our clients are always happy to share their experiences. Read our testimonials.
We offer surgical consults daily to diagnose and answer questions. We strive to ensure that any questions or concerns regarding your pet’s surgery are answered in detail. It is important to us that you understand why we are recommending the procedure, the procedure itself, and any specific post operative care requirements.

What happens on the day of surgery
A thorough pre-surgical blood panel is completed to make sure your furry friend is healthy for anesthesia. A full physical exam will be repeated after your pet is admitted for surgery. We then tailor an individualized anesthetic protocol for your pet.
Our entire staff at San Diego Bay is well-trained to monitor anesthesia and care for your pet throughout his or her stay until they are fully recovered and discharged. We strongly believe in the importance of appropriate pain management to keep all of our patients as comfortable and stress free as possible before, during, and after surgery.
Our state-of-the-art equipment allows us to fully monitor your pet’s blood pressure, ekg, heart rate, respirations, oxygen levels and temperature.
When your pet is discharged from surgery, we will provide you with detailed instructions regarding feeding, medications, any exercise restrictions and special postoperative home care instructions. We encourage you to contact us with any questions or concerns arise once your pet is home from surgery.
At San Diego Bay Animal Hospital we offer a wide range of surgical options.
We are strong proponents of less is more and always take time to discuss the most cost effective alternatives to surgery whenever possible. Here are a couple other options that we may recommend before surgery.
· Stem cell injections
· Arthritis injections
· Cold Laser Therapy and physical therapy options
· Pain control and other medical management methods
